to get to ocean much faster. narrator: cities throughout southern california converted natural rivers to these concrete channels, part of their storm drain systems. this allowed expanding development without the need for large flood plains. kharaghani: the los angeles river is approximately 51 miles. concrete reduces the size of the river that you need to carry the water because it speeds up the flow of water. if you'd like to remove all the concrete and to have natural system to carry the water to protect you from flooding, you need to have almost one mile on each side of the river set aside for transport of rain. so in order for the city to have use of those lands around the river, concrete made it possible to have minimum land so the water can be carried to the ocean in the fastest possible way. but, unfortunately, because of population growth and poor housekeeping, people are putting a lot of pollutants on the street and the streets are the openings to our stormwater sewer system. in an average year, 4,000 to 5,000 tons of trash ends up in long beach. man: we've created a system t

a drill every year. and in two 000 at on california and 2009 at ferry building and vacated it in the morning and when bart was going to strike and we were ready and ten on mid-market and this year two fire drills and the chief's wife is here and her team was spectacular and the they had two drills and i will show you a video in a minute. why do we do that? why do we have our member dos that? because we want to test that response plan because it's no good on paper unless you test it and we do that. we run drills and it takes about a drill to do, to plan. we work with the public sector agency and it was the fire department and next year alsolet fire department and we had drills with the police department swat and a day long drill and you name the emergency we probably planned for it, and i am not here to brag. i am here to tell you these drills help and we can't do that without the city and our members get the lessons from that drill. anyway i won't take too much more of your time. again i am honored to be here. this is a video of the drill and it's somewhat funny -- an

of the university of california san francisco community partnership's fourth annual partnership's celebration. this took place on october 18th and i am pleased to announce that two of our collaborations were honored that evening. the first of which was the learner and community partnership award, which went to our physical education partnership and that is comprised of the pd department, shape up san francisco and our lead department. they were awarded for forming a pe advocates team that examined the quality and quantity of the pe offered in the san francisco unified school district. we were also recognized for our partnership for our staff award and this went to a program called enhancing young woman's health through university partnerships. it is an innovative program, it is a 12 partnership between ucsf woman's health and usfd school health and wellness centers. i want to thank all of the staff members and all of the staff members from ucsf from their collaboration and particularly to claudia, and steven. speaking of partnerships i would like to call your attention to one of our strongest

in california for the high level of discourse that you have incredibly impressed today by what i have heard and my hats off to you for all the good work you're doing. so i do advocacy and part of that is kind of reaching out to people and bringing the message of social emotional learning not just to schools because educators kind of get it. it's not a stretch when we talk to them why it's important to get it, but we want to take the message outside of the school into the media, into the communities, into families so that people kind of understand this process of another way of learning and becoming an educated person. a couple of other things i do i work with anne on the board and with the foundation. that has been exciting. i do advising for sesame street. if you have small children the next seafn sesame street you will see some of the favorite characters and breathing and learning problem solving models and we're very excited -- >> [inaudible] >>

weak a sniper school not in training in bridgeport, california. following pairs foundation of north carolina for infantry training. after that i went off to hawaii for the next four years. and this is where i also went to sniper school. so after attending sniper school, quickly shipped off to iraq. i didn't get to complete my tour because i was bitten on my right hand by an enemy spider and i suffered severe nerve damage. i want to let everyone in this room know that the enemy will stop at nothing. they even train their spiders to guide us. so he turned back on for two years of additional training and trying to get my head back and this is when i became a sniper team leader charging five other marines and their out of mojave viper, training to go back to iraq. nick dennis archer what can said we need five volunteers to go to afghanistan. a separate submission? he said we don't know. just a 25 volunteers had appeared a race by hand and said to go. i ended up being assigned to small team of advisers were going to act as advisers to the afghan national army. this is not used in normal
